This isn't so much a post as a listing. I've been getting back into music recently. Music's always been something deep for me, though it's been a long time since I've let myself steep in it. A long time since I've explored it. But recently I've been bumbling around and have found a few new sparks for making embers.

In fact, for the first time in years I'm considering actually investing some money in music. Y'know, whenever I have some money around. So, for years from now when that happens, here's a snapshot of artists I'm currently hoping to explore:

  • Rihanna — Music of the Sun primarily for the song Pon De Replay though she sounds fun overall
  • YukiWAVE or anything else really, though her name's, er, hard to search for
  • Rei Harakami — anything but [lust] which I already have
  • Pretty Girls Make GravesGood Health or Élan Vital as I already have The New Romance
  • Catpower — anything. period. Recommendations?
  • Jason Webley — anything but Counterpoint which I already have
  • 雅-Miyavi- — anything since I only have single songs
  • Wild Colonials — anything but This Can't Be Life which I already have
  • Silver Jews — anything but American Water which I already have
  • Jonathan Coultonum, yeah.
  • Soemon (箏衛門) — because koto rocks
  • JJ Lin 林俊傑 — possibly the album 曹操 for a place to start
  • Loituma — mmm Finnish folk music. You may have seen this around some while back
  • Wolfsheim — Could be fun
  • Dir en Grey — anything but Withering to death. which I already have
  • Throwing Muses, or, Kristin Hersh — anything I still don't have
  • Jason Mraz — maybe Mr. A-Z primarily for the song Geek in the Pink

As you may have noticed, quite a number of those are japanese. I'm hoping that by the time I have the money to throw down I'll be able to get a friend of mine in Japan to get them and ship them to save on shipping. Mainly because doubling the already high prices for the importer's fees in addition to shipping, yeah, not so much.

*when* I get a good internet connection, I can sets you up with lots-o-webley... in that, I have all of it, including all of his new colaborations, and some bootlegged stuff... somewhere. that is, if you want electronic media (which it would sound like you don't)... as for the shipping... I'm here... in Japan no less... ;-)

And I have some Wolfsheim... indeed... they are good.

I DLed the Cat Power and haven't had a good chance to listen to it. So far, the vocalist isn't my cuppa, but I'll still check it out more.

And, if you haven't checked out the following, I would recommend: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, OK Go!, Of Montreal, and the Editors on the indie side. Sigur Ros and The Guillemots on the mellow/electronic side.

I was actually intending on buying the Webley. I like supporting the artists I really enjoy, particularly the smaller ones who are doing their work between shifts at the dayjob. Webley's pretty established these days, but all the same. And besides, I know him, so for all the free concerts I've been to it'll be nice to help him eat. Thanks though :)

I might be interested in some of the bootlegs, live works, and other things that aren't available from his site. I have a live version of Jason Webley and Jay Thompson doing Eleven Saints at Camp Tomato at the Paradox, 30 April 2005 if you've managed to miss that one.

How long are you in Japan for? Last I heard it was sounding like you were settling down a bit there. Do you have any plans for how long you'll stay, or just until the wind carries you elsewhere?

I only have a couple songs by Wolfsheim. They're one of the bands I discovered back when I was goth clubbing last spring. Pretty good stuff, though I think I might want to hear more before figuring out which album(s) to get.

I'm actually a big fan of the vocalist for Catpower. Generally I'm a big fan of unique voices, particularly atypical female singers. I've talked about Yuki (http://winterkoninkje.livejournal.com/38363.html) before who's also not everyone's cuppa vocalist. And the singer from Pretty Girls is also fairly unique. For Catpower, you should check out The Werewolf Song if you have it, both just to hear it and the lyrics (http://www.alwaysontherun.net/catpower.htm#were).

Angela McCluskey (Wild Colonials) is another great example of an instantly identifiable singer I can't resist. After I get more of the Colonials I'd like to get some of her solo work, it's a bit bluesier but also very good. Which reminds me, I need to get ahold of a tape deck so I can rip some of the live Colonials I have on tape before the tapes die of age. If you're interested I could send copies of those once they're ripped, it's just three songs or so. She's a bit even more all out than usual on the records.

I've heard a bit of CYHSY! and Sigur Ros, though I don't have any to quite recall them. I'll definitely have to check some of those out.
